Low Self-Esteem/Shame
Low self-esteem is often the underlying theme for many clients' issues. It is commonly said to be a women's issue, but that is a myth. There are many men in my practice who experience low self-esteem and performance pressure. In therapy, we work from the starting point; from self-criticism to self-esteem. It can be a helpful and very "up-building" experience to make a deep dive into your narrative and find the roots to our identity.
It is experienced as follows:
- Self-criticism: Living with a negative self-image.
- Living under the sense of weaknesses, flaws, and shortcomings.
- I am not good enough - not nearly as good as others.
- Guilt feelings.
- Easily becomes dark - sad or depressed.
- Mild depression.
- Hesitation in decision-making, insecurity, and reluctance.
People try to cope with their inferiority or low self-esteem by hiding or repressing it. Behavior changes, and the response patterns (conscious and unconscious) vary - from evasive maneuvers, hesitation, apologizing, and omission. It can also involve setting high standards for oneself, being controlling, perfectionistic, and possibly performance-oriented behavior.
Low self-esteem can also manifest in attention-seeking behavior (aggressive demeanor, destructive tendencies, high thoughts of oneself, sexual extremes). Finally, low self-esteem may manifest in depression, eating disorders, anxiety, OCD, anger, and social anxiety. It comes in many "disguises" and is often treated as another "disorder" or part of one.
Causes of low self-esteem are many, and we explore where the feeling people bring has its roots. Early life conditions and childhood, psychological and social factors, neglect, or lack of attachment all play a role.
The therapy can go in many directions which depends on the clients needs, openness and curiosity.
